Can each of us, by playing music and sharing this magic with those we love, make our world a more harmonious place to hang ...?
The title of this page is a bit tongue in cheek so to speak, to prompt the reader to look at their own "big picture." And as each of us is as unique as the stars in the heavens, we each potentially have our own vision of what the big picture looks like. We do this personal assessment so that we can find a cool and comfortable place to start, set realistic and attainable goals and figure out what we need to do to reach them. Educators often call this individualizing instruction, to simply create a unique curriculum based on what each new learner brings. Setting such goals helps us to attain what we need to create and share our music with those around us, thus bringing greater joy to the worlds in which we each live.
So what about your big picture? What music do you want to play? What styles and sounds do you want to create? Is the theory of music an important component of your studies? Can you get what you need by simply listening to the artist's music you love and emulate their ideas in the early creation of your own ideas? Do you read music? Want to learn how? Practically every European and American artist from the 1700's onward has used the resources of equal temper to create all or part of their work. American music is unique in the addition of the more indigenous blues colors, which flavor the music in our own unique American way. Perhaps keep in mind that as you search for your muse, the knowledge of music theory will help you identify the sounds used to create the music you dig, allowing you to create and continue to paint your "big picture."
Are there different "theory pictures" for all of us? Absolutely. But you knew that eh? And although they often contain similar elements in a similar organization, we often have different needs as players, necissitating a different organization of the resources. Of course all of this tends to happen unconsciously, and we are rarely if ever asked to draw a picture of how we understand the theory, but if we were, chances are no two pictures would be identical, just as no two of us tend to sound the same etc. Cool? Thus, we perhaps again get at the heart and soul of the American spirit, that no two "pictures" need to be a like, that all of our pictures are valuable and that we must encourage and share these ideals with all who wish to partake.
Stumped as to where to begin your studies? Well, there is always the start button eh? Maybe we can help. Perhaps write us with your questions. Click about the author to view my big picture.
