12 tone composition

As he title of this page implies, here we are going to create compositions using all 12 tones of the chromatic scale. The trick with 12 tone music is that oftentimes writers will create a tone row which is really just a fancy name for scale and use this "row" as the melodic figure in the tune. In addition, it's not uncommon to find some sort of mathematical underpinning to composition, whereby a common numerical formula helps to shape the piece and hold it in place.

In writing this page, I though that if there is such a thing as 12 tone composition there must be other " # tone" ways to compose. So here is a simply listing of various numerical ways to compose gradually adding pitches and exploring what's there.

do but using the chromatic scale as your primary melodic resource. The trick at this juncture is to simply rearrange the pitches of the chromatic scale into a "tone row", which becomes the parent scale of the work. Cool? Not to heavy in terms of theory, it's the sound of the music that oftentimes radically differes from what we hear on the radio.
