sing the color

Is it possible to find some of our "instinctual" musical inclinations by singing musical ideas created from our various melodic resources and sensing within ourselves which of the colors are nearest to our hearts? What we are trying to do here is find definite pitches that "belong" to each of our voices, then place them into the various groupings of pitches and create melodic ideas to capture the essence of their color. By singing through these ideas, we each look for sounds we instinctively hear, combinations of pitches or colors that just "feel right", that we enjoy the experience and connect.

Are some of us more partial to the major tonality, with it's abilities to lift our spirits and create the brightness in so many joyous American melodies? Are some of us drawn to the more reflective and passionate sides of the minor tonality, which creates a sense of strength and fortitude today while conjuring up remembrances from our pasts? Do the blues colors strike the chords within you? To each there own eh? For sure, the freedom of individual choice is one to be always cherished and maintained.

So as time permits, sing the following lines created from our melodic colors. If certain pitches are strong in your voice and they feel good, make a note of them and recreate the pitch from memory. Place your best pitches in different environments, see what happens. If one of the following ideas prompts other ideas, as you "improvise" your line from the written line, explore that color and use it in your artistic creations, creating vehicles for your best ideas. Maybe this exercise will help create a solid connect of a color to it's theory and once identified, explore from there. And if it happens with one of the colors, could it happen with others? Are the advanced players the folks who have defined for themselves the meaning of the musical colors, thus creating a wide palette of colors with which to intimately tell their stories? How individual is the interpretation of a color? Do similar interpretations by different people point to a universal consciousness we all can draw upon, be part of and share? Any thoughts on these ideas?
